Interesting Fact: In 1776, several Spanish explorers traveling on a nearby river were lost. Their bodies were never found and the others believed that the souls of the lost men would therefore be relegated to Purgatory. From this legend was born the original name of our ski area, Purgatory Resort, which opened in 1965. The resort has since been renamed "Durango Mountain Resort". Also, following this legendary expedition the river was named: "El Rio de las Animas Perdidas" or the River of Lost Souls (Now simply called the Animas River).
