Take a ride back through time behind a historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive. Enjoy the sites and sounds of yesteryear on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad as it winds through 46 miles of the San Juan National Forest to the old mining town of Silverton, Colorado, a National Historic Landmark.
The Denver & Rio Grande Railway arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882 the tracks to Silverton were completed and the train began transporting both freight and passengers. The line was originally constructed to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized that it was the view that was truly precious. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will have been in continuous operation for 125 years in 2006.
You are cordially invited to visit the Railroad Museum before or after your adventure on the train. The price of a ticket on the train includes admission into the Railroad Museum, which brings to life the heritage of railroading in the Rockies through rare photos, memorabilia, and full-size locomotives.

Fun Fact: Construction on the rail line to Silverton began in the fall of 1881, and was completed the following July of 1882 - only 9 months later!
