Although Durango’s population is about sixteen-thousand
year-around residents, it supports a vital and diverse
cultural community that draws people from around the
Four Corners Region. The visual and performing arts
are represented by a myriad of artists and performers
as well as community groups, patrons, and supporters.
Following is a partial list of shows, events, festivals
and community groups associated with the arts and
culture in Durango.
• Music in the Mountains – a three-week
classical series featuring musicians from major symphony
orchestras and chamber music programs held in a spectacular
mountain setting.
• Main Avenue Juried Arts Festival – a
two day festival featuring artists in every medium
from throughout the U.S. which draws thousands of
attendees from around the country.
• Durango Songwriter’s Expo – one
of America’s most prestigious singer-songwriter
gatherings with over 100 writers and performing artists
and 25-30 music industry professionals in attendance.
• Durango Gallery Association – this organization
represents eight galleries that feature works from
regional and national artists in a wide variety of
media.
• Durango Film Festival – a ten day, juried
festival featuring independent feature films, documentaries,
animated films, shorts, experimental and new media
works.
• Durango Meltdown – a two-day festival
featuring some of the finest Bluegrass bands and performers
from around the nation.
• The Durango Arts Center – the DAC is
a 35-year-old nonprofit organization, which is a showcase
of our community’s commitment to the arts. It
features a gallery, museum shop, performances and
educational exhibits.
• Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall
– this beautiful, state of the art concert hall
features an amazing array of musical productions including
individual performers, opera, musical groups, and
Broadway musicals.
• Durango Shakespeare Festival – Fort
Lewis College’s annual summer stock theater
productions of the works of Shakespeare in a beautiful
outdoor amphitheater surrounded by the spectacular
peaks of the San Juan Mountains.
• The Dance Center – Durango’s center
for dance offering ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, salsa,
swing, tango and more for people of all ages through
classes and performances.
• Durango Cowboy Gathering – a three-day
celebration of cowboy culture with music, poetry,
story telling and a motorless parade.
• Celtic Festival – a music event held
at Durango Mountain Report.
