Ski the locals’ favorite terrain at Durango Mountain Resort located just 25 miles north of Durango in the scenic San Juan Mountains. Durango Mountain Resort (or DMR, as the locals call it) enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, receives an average annual snowfall of 260 inches, and boasts some of the most spectacular views of any Colorado ski resort. Winter Activities at Durango Mountain Resort

During the winter months, Durango Mountain Resort offers visitors 1,200 skiable acres and 85 trails serviced by 11 lifts. Durango Mountain Resort offers terrain for all ability levels as well as ski and snowboard lessons, ski and snowboard rentals, and Durango ski packages. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, visitors can enjoy snowcat trips, snowmobiling, Nordic and cross country skiing, and sleigh rides. Spring and Summer Activities at Durango Mountain Resort

Ski season ends in April, but the fun at Durango Mountain Resort continues into the summer. Visitors to Durango Mountain Resort from June through September can enjoy a variety of warm-weather activities from scenic chairlift rides, to mountain biking and hiking, and activities for the whole family like an alpine slide, climbing wall, and outdoor concerts. Purgatory: A Brief History of Durango Mountain Resort

In 1776 several Spanish explorers traveling on a nearby river were lost and their bodies were never found. Those left behind believed that the souls of the lost explorers would be relegated to Purgatory, and from this legend was born the original name of Durango’s ski area, “Purgatory Resort”, which opened in 1965.
