DURANGO’S ARTS AND CULTURAL COMMUNITY
Durango’s population of sixteen-thousand year-around residents supports a vital and diverse cultural and arts community. The visual and performing arts are represented by a myriad of artists and performers as well as community groups, patrons, and supporters. - Music in the Mountains –a three and one-half week summer festival featuring orchestra, chamber music and conservatory young artists performances of classical and world music. Musical leaders Gregory Hustis, Guillermo Figueroa and Arkady Fomin bring acclaimed soloists and renowned musicians to spectacular venues in the San Juan Mountains. - The world-renowned Henry Strater Theatre is one of the oldest and most prestigious continually running theatres in Colorado, tallying almost 50 years of quality performances. - Durango Gallery Association – this organization represents numerous galleries that feature works from regional and national artists in a wide variety of media.
- Durango Art Galleries—Home to more than 14 commercial galleries, Center for Southwest Studies and Art Gallery at Fort Lewis College, and two Durango Art Center Galleries. Featuring works from contemporary fine art to Southwestern pottery, Native American to folk arts from around the world, western art to jewelry and textiles.
- Durango Independent Film Festival – a juried festival featuring independent feature films, documentaries, animated films, shorts, experimental and new media works. www.durangofilm.org

- The Durango Arts Center – a 35-year-old nonprofit organization which is a showcase of our community’s commitment to the arts. It features a gallery, museum shop, performances and educational exhibits. DAC Kids offers year-round arts classes and programs. The Paint Bar is an open studio for all ages to explore the creative process through painting and art-oriented activities. - Durango Shakespeare Festival – Fort Lewis College’s annual summer stock theater productions of the works of Shakespeare in a beautiful outdoor amphitheater surrounded by the spectacular peaks of the San Juan Mountains.
- The Dance Center – Durango’s center for dance offering ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, salsa, swing, tango and more for people of all ages through classes and performances.
