Get your motor runnin’ and head on out to the city of Ignacio, Colorado for the biggest and best in Colorado motorcycle events, Ignacio Bike Week, held August 31st to September 5th. For seven rip-roaring days, 22,000 bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts decend on the Durango area for a week’s worth of two-wheeled festivities, plus big-name concerts, burn out competitions, bull riding, arm wrestling, beauty contests, cook-offs, and much more.
Roll into town Wednesday and settle in at one of the many Durango-area campgrounds. You’ll have miles and miles of scenic Colorado motorcycle rides to choose from and an opportunity to experience the beauty and serenity of the open road before the crowds arrive. Head out to the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum to check out an exibition of antique Indian Motorcycles dating back to the earliest days of biker culture.
Thursday, head over to the Sugar Pine Ranch Rally in Mancos, part of the concurrent Four Corners Motorcycle Rally, to hear some great live music and visit the unique vendors. Along the way, stop in Durango and have a beer at one of Durango’s breweries and check out the The Strater and The General Palmer in historic downtown Durango to learn the secrets of some of Durango’s most historic visitors.
On Friday things start to heat up in Ignacio. Sign up for the 250-mile San Juan Skyway Poker Run. This run takes riders on the 70-mile stretch of motorcycling bliss known as “The Million Dollar Highway” to Ouray, over the mountains to Silverton and Telluride, back down to Durango and Ignacio, and is the best way for visitors to see what Four Corners motorcycling is all about.
Bike Week really hits its stride on Saturday. Enter your trusty steed in the bike show or compete in some of the fun biker events including the plank ride, slow ride, keg roll, and more. Hit the beer garden for a cold one and if you’re feeling brave, strap yourself to the back of a 1,600 lb. bull in the Biker Bull Riding event. Finish up the night rockin’ with the weekend’s marquis headliner, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
Spend the rest of the weekend riding with the poker runs or the Sunday Motorcycle Parade, check out some more great live music, or head out for a ride up to the Durango Mountain Resort or Vallecito Lake. There’s tons of other great events and things to do in the Durango area throughout the weekend and into Monday.
