Head to the Durango Discovery Museum for Family Fun in Durango, Colorado

The Power of Fun

Our mission: To ignite curiosity, spark imagination, and power exploration.
Our vision: To be a leading science and educational center in the Southwest that brings together curious minds of all ages, inspires innovative learning, and unleashes human potential.

Visitors looking for things to do in Durango should explore the historical power plant, home to the famous Durango Discovery Museum. Recently completed, Phase II of the Powerhouse project offers new Museum programs and Durango activities for every member of the family. You’ll discover plenty of fun activities for the kids, as well as interactive learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) – all within Durango’s historical Powerhouse!

From the exciting hands-on displays to the amazing exhibits and programs, if you’re looking for family-friendly things to do in Durango, the Durango Discovery Museum is the place for you. Other popular activities include:

  • The Interactive Science and Discovery center. Located inside the power plant, this is where you’ll find a wide variety of Durango activities for visitors of all ages.
  • Durango Discovery Kids (formerly the Children’s Museum of Durango) is a special play and discovery area, which features activities and special programs for kids 0-9 years old. Located at 802 E. 2nd Ave upstairs in the Durango Arts Center.
  • Sudden Science™ and The Solar Roller™ are science and technology outreach programs for schools throughout the Four Corners. Email info@durangodiscovery.org for more information about these and other exciting Durango activities.

The Past
In 1892, the Durango Light and Power Company installed a fledgling technology known as alternating current (AC) power in a Mission-style commercial building that was the first of its kind outside of California. The plant provided electricity to Durango well before AC was available in the great cities of the East. Closed in the mid-70’s, it remains the oldest standing coal-fired, steam-generated AC power plant in the United States.

The Future
As we continue to expand the events and attractions at the Powerhouse, future phases of the project will include:

  • A vibrant riverfront café, shop, and event pavilion.
  • A sound garden/science park and a riparian cove for ecology studies.
  • Research and demonstration labs for energy and sustainability projects.

The revitalized Powerhouse will welcome over 30,000 visitors a year – a projected $3 million annual contribution to the region’s economy.

Blues on the Rails
Choo Choo with the blues… it was no ordinary ride on the scenic steam train and I missed it. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train pulled out of the rail yard last Saturday as the “Durango Blues Train” for an evening of Blues on the Rails.
