BID promotes 2nd annual “Fall for Downtown Durango Days”
Umbrella promotion designed to showcase events in September &amp; October 2007

DURANGO, Colo. – The Durango Business Improvement District (BID) will for the second year underwrite “Fall for Downtown Durango Days” – a $12,000 umbrella marketing program designed to help promote the many events and activities held in and around Durango during September and October 2007.
“The program was designed to spur what is known as our fall ‘shoulder season’ when tourism is purportedly soft,” said Bob Kunkel, Durango’s Downtown business and promotions specialist. “Well, given the extensive list of ‘happenings’ in our little berg, I’m not sure we’ll have a shoulder season this year. The hotels may have rooms available, but if folks come out and attend even a few of these events, the town will be buzzing.”
Fall for Durango Days was based on the success of the BID’s original umbrella promotion “Holidazzle,” which during its six week effort over the Christmas holidays, markedly boosted sales tax in the Central Business District, above the same period in previous years. In 2006, Fall for Downtown Durango Days may have assisted in the reported boost of the sales tax nearly 12 percent during Sept. and Oct. over the same period in 2005.
“There are a number of factors that could contribute to the jump,” said Kunkel. “But we think Fall for Downtown Durango Days and all the efforts of the BID and the City to promote the Downtown have something to do with it.”
Pieces of the 2007 promotional campaign will include regional advertising and printed advertising materials, including special newspaper inserts and posters highlighting all qualifying events.
“Part of the mission of the BID is to help sustain existing businesses within the district,” said John Wells, BID presiding officer. “We’re coming in to our third year sponsoring such umbrella marketing efforts, and we find it a cost effective way to keep Durango in the public eye for an extended period of time. We feel underwriting Fall for Downtown Durango Days is certainly a good investment.”
Literally dozens of events are planned for September and October 2007 (see Calendar following). For further information on BID activities and happenings in Historic Downtown Durango, visit www.downtowndurango.org.

Colorful New Orleans pianist, singer and songwriter Dr. John offers up his music gumbo at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Tues., Aug. 21 at 8 p.m.

Known for performing in full Mardi Gras regalia, which adds a theatrical aspect to his shows, Dr. John offers up hearty vocals with a thick Louisiana twang and a rollicking keyboard that ranges from home-style New Orleans R&amp;B and jazz to rock and roll. He is perhaps most widely known for his 1973 hit, “Right Place, Wrong Time,” reprised extensively in the film “Dazed and Confused.”

Working and performing early on as Mac Rebennack, a derivation of his birth name, Dr. John adopted his stage name from a legendary 19th century Louisiana voodoo practitioner. His most recent work has centered around New Orleans/Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, including the release of “Sippiana Hericane” to benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic, Salvation Army and the Jazz Foundation of America. <title>Durango Breweries "Go Green"</title>

				<description>The Bootlegger’s Society
A consortium of Durango’s four award-winning Craft Breweries

News

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 9, 2007
For further information, contact Brian McEachron, Steamworks Director of Marketing and Sales, 970.799.3481, or Dave Thibodeau, Ska Co-founder, 970.759.2059, or Mike Hurst, Carver’s Co-owner, 946.2459

Durango’s award-winning craft brewers now powered by “Wind”
100% of beer brewed in Durango, Colorado, is produced using “Green Power”

DURANGO, Colo. – Green beer is not reserved for St. Patrick’s Day – especially in Durango, Colorado.
One hundred percent of the craft beer produced by Durango’s four award-winning craft breweries – Carver Brewing Co., Durango Brewing Co., Ska Brewing Co., and Steamworks Brewing Co. – is now “Green.” Or more accurately, now being brewed using 100 percent “Green Power” – electricity generated from a renewable resource.
La Plata Electric Association (LPEA), the rural electric cooperative that supplies power to Durango, offers businesses and individuals opportunity to purchase Green Power at a premium of $1.25 per 100 kilowatt-hour block. Currently, the majority of the Green Power available through LPEA’s power supplier Tri-State Generation &amp; Transmission is the renewable resource of wind power. All four breweries are taking a leadership role in the Green Power effort, banding together as the loosely-based consortium of “The Bootlegger’s Society,” to purchase enough Green Power at a premium to cover all of their electricity consumption.
-more-

“I think it’s probably safe to say we’re the only community in the country where all the craft brewers are brewing with ‘wind.’ Among the four of us, we brew about 15,000 barrels of beer per year,” said Brian McEachron, Steamworks director of marketing and sales, noting that Steamworks operates two brewpubs (restaurant and brewery combined) in both Durango and nearby Bayfield. “Utilizing electricity from a renewable resource such as wind is just the ‘right’ thing to do.”
The Bootleggers have been leaders in environmental responsibility within the manufacturing/restaurant community of Durango for many years. In addition to traditional efforts such as recycling, the breweries donate nutrient-rich spent grain (grain used in the brewing process) to local ranchers for cattle feed and have replaced petroleum-based plastic beer cups with those made from compostable corn.
“We are continually looking at ways to leave a smaller carbon footprint, and lead by example in the community,” said Dave Thibodeau, co-founder of Durango’s largest craft brewery, Ska Brewing. Ska recently broke ground on a new 20,000 barrel capacity brewery that is being designed to LEED (Leadership in Environmental Engineering and Design) or “green” standards, and is expected to be a model for microbreweries when opened in 2008.
Steamworks and Carver’s have also met with officials from La Plata Electric to improve energy efficiencies at their operations.
“Even though we’re purchasing Green Power, we don’t want to waste it,” said Mike Hurst, co-owner of Carver’s. “Every effort helps, and we want to demonstrate that it can actually be beneficial and cost effective for businesses to ‘go green.’”
To reward other businesses who are making a similar commitment and purchasing Green Power, The Bootlegger’s, in conjunction with LPEA, are planning a special “wind” party at the end of the summer tourism season. Only those purchasing Green Power will receive that very special invitation.
“It’s not a lot of hot air,” said McEachron.
To learn more about Green Power purchase, visit LPEA on the web, www.lpea.coop, or call 970.247.5786.

Durango &amp; Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Resume Service to Silverton

Durango, CO –The Durango &amp; Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will resume its Service to Silverton on Friday, July 27, 2007 after a large mudslide north of Needleton prevented the train from carrying passengers past Cascade Canyon. The mudslide occurred sometime late Saturday, July 21 or early Sunday, July 22 at No Name Rapids, which is approximately 34 miles from Durango.

Railroad Maintenance of Way crews have been working since Sunday morning with bulldozers and a track hoe to clear the slide, which was estimated to be 30-40-feet deep, 100-feet wide, and 200-feet long and was made up of mud, boulders, and trees.

The railroad’s morning patrol discovered the slide at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Sunday and trains were then held at Cascade Canyon, which is 26 miles up the track from Durango. Service to Silverton has been suspended for five days, although excursions to Cascade Canyon have been available for all passengers.

Trains will leave Durango for Silverton on Friday at the normal departure times of 7:30 a.m.;
8:15 a.m.; 9:00 a.m., and 9:45 a.m.

The Durango &amp; Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been in continuous operation since 1881. The D&amp;SNGRR operates authentic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotives through the remote wilderness and high-mountain landscape of the San Juan National Forest in Southwest Colorado.

Due to heavy rain on July 22, 2007 a large mudslide occurred in the upper canyon. The train is traveling to Cascade Canyon instead of Silverton until further notice. If you have a reservation with us, we hope you will take the ride to Cascade Canyon. This experience offers a 52-mile trip along the beautiful Animas river, over the highline and the high bridge. The train stops at Cascade Canyon for approximately 45 minutes. There are great picnic spots, short hiking trails, and many photo opportunities.

We are offering a price adjustment for the ride to Cascade Canyon. You may also rebook for another day. All tickets to Silverton must be exchanged in the depot ticket office prior to boarding. You will receive a new ticket for today’s trip.

				<title>Rhythms of Durango Vol. 2</title>

Production planned for Rhythms of Durango Vol. 2
Durango Business Improvement District seeking local recording artists

DURANGO, Colo. – The Durango Business Improvement District (BID) is seeking recording artists of all genres to be part of Rhythms of Durango, Vol. 2. Musicians and vocalists who play venues in Historic Downtown Durango and who have recorded songs – preferably original – are encouraged to submit their CDs for consideration.
Rhythms, an eclectic mix of the sounds of downtown, is designed to enliven and help sustain Downtown Durango by promoting its varied music venues, drawing visitors to Downtown and, by extension, supporting local musicians and retailers. Release date is planned for Nov. 23 – in time for holiday shopping.
“Production does, however, begin now,” said Pam Glasco, co-producer of Rhythms with Indiana Reed. “We learned a lot the first year out, so we’re giving ourselves ample time to complete the project.”
Artists selected for inclusion on the CD are asked to submit a written bio and publicity photo – which can be the cover art for a CD. These become the basis for the liner notes – or the “booklet” – that is a part of the CD package.
“One of the things I really wanted to do with this project was promote our artists,” said Reed. “I’d love it if somebody is listening to the CD and then they happen to open the paper and see that the artist is playing at The Office or The Wild Horse, or wherever, and it prompts them to go Downtown for the ‘live’ music. It’s all a part of raising that tide so all boats float.”
Reed also stressed that in the Rhythms liner notes, artists’ contact information and web sites are included.

“We have space constraints, but I’m hoping in the Vol. 2 liner notes that we can include a listing of our music venues,” said Reed. “These CDs are sold to Durango’s visitors. If I’m sitting in a hotel room in a new town, I look for information on where I should ‘be’ to hear some great music.”
For consideration, recording artists are asked to submit their CDs by Aug. 15, in person to the Business Improvement District office, 1199 Main Ave. (Bank of Colorado building), Suite 210, or by mail, PO Box 1405, Durango, 81302.
“We are deliberately selecting an eclectic mix of artists and sounds,” said Glasco. “Just like Vol. 1, we want it to be a wonderful blend that ranges from country and bluegrass to jazz and rock, and more.”
Limited copies of Rhythms of Durango Vol. 1, featuring The Badly Bent, Lacey Black &amp; Red Rhapsody, Alison Dance, Formula 151, John Garza, Tim Guidotti, High Rollers, The Hot Strings, Kirk James, Lawn Chair Kings, Lawrence Nass, Terry Rickard, Greg Ryder, The Shoes!, Sally Shuffield, Jeff Solon, Staboola McPet Quintet and Wild Blooms – are also available at the BID office for merchants who wish to offer the CDs for sale through the summer season.
For further information on the project, contact Glasco at 375.5067, pamg@downtowndurango.org, or Reed at 382.9734, indiana@mydurango.net.
