Are You Experienced? Durango Wine Experience set for May 2-4, 2013 - April 30, 2013

El Moro Spirits & Tavern to open in Downtown Durango - March 11, 2013
DURANGO, Colo. – A new eatery will soon be added to Durango’s revered restaurant community as El Moro Spirits & Tavern is slated to open Memorial Day weekend 2013. Located at 945 Main Ave. in Durango’s Historic Downtown, El Moro will serve lunch and dinner daily, plus brunch on weekends.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Announces Service to the North Pole Again This Holiday Sea - November 16, 2012
Durango, CO –The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will begin service to the North Pole onboard The Polar Express beginning November 16, 2012. The magical story comes to life when the train departs the Durango depot for a one-hour, 15-minute round-trip journey to the North Pole.

Durango Area Tourism Office Welcomes New Group Sales Manager - November 16, 2012
Durango, CO – The Durango Area Tourism Office (DATO) welcomes Patti O’Brien as the Group Sales Manager. Ms. O'Brien brings more than 20 years of experience in sales, marketing and management. Raised in Durango in the tourism and hospitality industry, Patti studied economics at CSU then received her business finance degree at California State University, Long Beach. She spent 12 years as CEO of VersaType, Inc. a digital communications and graphics agency. She has received several top national sales recognition and international leadership awards for her sales and training programs. Prior to DATO, Patti owned, operated and sold a local ladies fitness center, then represented numerous local businesses as Regional Account Manager for Ballantine Digital Communications and BuzzTown.

Steamworks’ Happy Hour fundraiser raises $730 for Annie’s Orphans - November 16, 2012
DURANGO, Colo. – Steamworks Brewing Co. has presented a $500 check to Annie’s Orphans, the non-profit sanctuary for abandoned, neglected and abused dogs, proceeds from the “Happy Hour” fundraiser held on Nov. 7, 2012, during Firkin Friday. Annie’s Orphans also enjoyed and additional $230 in donations that evening from Steamworks’ patrons.

US Capitol Christmas Tree to Visit Durango - October 22, 2012
DURANGO, CO – En route to Washington D.C. with the US Capitol Christmas Tree, former United States Senator Ben Nighthorse will stop in downtown Durango for a welcoming party on November 9th. Sorrel Sky Gallery will host the accompanying 48-piece art exhibit for the evening as well as a book signing with author Chris Vandeleur.

George Lundeen to be Featured in Special Reception - August 15, 2012
Sorrel Sky Gallery will feature Colorado bronze artist George Lundeen on August 17th. Known for his lifelike, energetic sculptures of athletes, George has won award after award since 1979.

Steamworks Brewing Co. honored for beer “can” graphic design - August 15, 2012
Steamworks Brewing Co. has now been honored not only for what’s “in” the brewery’s craft beer cans, but what is “on” the cans, as the designs for the Colorado Kölsch and Steam Engine Lager received 1st and 2nd place honors, respectively, in two categories at the inaugural “Canny” Awards.

Durango Connect event moves one day to Sept. 27th - August 9, 2012
Durango Connect, the community celebration of the linking of the Animas River Trail has been moved one day to take place on Thursday, September 27, 2012. Event Co-Manager, Jack Turner, says the change is to accommodate the observance of Yom Kippur.

USA Pro Challenge Pro Bike Race and Festivities Start in Durango, Colorado - August 9, 2012
On the heels of the Tour de France and the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, the 2012 USA Pro Challenge takes center stage from August 20 - 26, 2012. Durango, Colorado is the overall start of “America’s Race” that features 16 of the world’s best professional cycling teams, including Cadel Evans and Levi Leipheimer. Commuter Challenge Winners Announced - July 3, 2012
Durango, CO – The 6th Annual Trails 2000 Commuter Challenge winners were announced Friday night at Carver Brewing Company. Trails 2000 partners with the City of Durango on Clean Commute Week to encourage corporate participation in the week’s events. Clean Commute Week is an effort by the City of Durango to encourage a shift in the way our citizens think about transportation. The goal is to promote the use of alternative modes of transportation to benefit people’s health, the health of our community and the environment.

The nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $9,053,126 in annual economic activity in the Durango area—supporting 309 full-time equivalent jobs and generating $645,000 in local and state government revenues, according to the Arts & Economic Prosperity IV national economic impact study. The most comprehensive economic impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted in the United States, Arts & Economic Prosperity IV was conducted by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education.

Fire Restrictions go into Effect Saturday on National Forest and BLM Lands in Southwest Colorado - June 7, 2012
As of Saturday, June 9, 2012, fire restrictions will go into effect for many of the lower and middle elevation public lands managed by the San Juan National Forest and Bureau of Land Management Tres Rios Field Office in southwestern Colorado.

Road information for Memorial Day Weekend: Background information for the Iron Horse - May 25, 2012
Memorial Day Weekend and the 41st Annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic begins on Saturday May 26th. For an added safety measure for both participants and vehicles, Highway 550 from the Iron Horse Inn to County Road 203 in Hermosa will be limited to northbound vehicular traffic traveling in the southbound shoulder while Iron Horse participants will be traveling in the northbound lane. Southbound traffic will be detoured onto County Road 203 at the railroad tracks in Hermosa and coming out onto the Highway at Mountain Mania (the old Sweeney’s location). This slight detour will be in effect from 7:15am until 9:00am on Saturday May 26, 2012. Animas Valley residents are encouraged to come out and cheer on the riders as they race the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Train to Silverton.

Road Information for Iron Horse Bicycle Classic - May 21, 2012
Memorial Day Weekend and the 41st Annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic begins on Saturday May 26th. Highway 550 will be closed from Durango Mountain Resort to Silverton, Colorado on Saturday May 26th from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00p.m. This is a special permit from the Colorado State Patrol.

Durango is named a Gold Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists - May 16, 2012
May is National Bike Month with hundreds of events and thousands of riders celebrating bicycling nationwide. And a growing number of U.S. communities are taking steps to encourage residents to ride all year round — including Durango. Today, the League of American Bicyclists announced the latest round of Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC) and Durango was named a Gold level BFC.

Steamworks Brewing Co. wins Gold at World Beer Cup - May 7, 2012
Steamworks Brewing Co.’s Berliner Weisse topped the German-Style Sour Ale category at the 2012 World Beer Cup, earning the unique brew a gold award in the international judging that was announced May 5, 2012. Steamworks’ Assistant General Managers Dave Woodruff and Steve Kammerer were on hand to accept the award.

Annual Narrow Gauge Day Celebration Kicks off Railroad’s Summer Season - May 3, 2012
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will kick off the opening of summer service to Silverton with the annual Narrow Gauge Day celebration in front of the Durango depot at 479 Main Avenue. This free community event will be Friday, May 4, 2012 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Durango Area Tourism Office Elects Board Members for 2012 - April 23, 2012
The Durango Area Tourism Office (DATO) announces the appointment of three new members on their Board of Directors with terms beginning in 2012. Board members represent the depth of tourism in La Plata County and they fairly represent all entities within their specific sector of the industry. The thirteen-member Board meets once a month and each member serves a 3-year term.

2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge Route Features American Professional Cycling’s Highest Elevation - April 4, 2012
The route for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge professional cycling stage race, taking place Aug. 20-26 in Colorado, will take riders on a heart-pounding journey through the breathtaking Colorado Rockies. After making history in the inaugural year by traveling to the highest elevation of any race in North America or Europe – higher than the most challenging route on the Tour de France – this year’s race will take the riders to an altitude of 12,000 ft. not once, but three separate times.

Williams Creek Campground to be Closed due to Safety Concerns - April 4, 2012
The Williams Creek Campground on the San Juan National Forest Pagosa Ranger District will be closed this season due to hazards associated an extensive outbreak of tree disease in the heavily forested campground. The popular campground, located 23 miles north of Pagosa Springs, has 67 campsites, which are often full on summer weekends and holidays.

The renowned dance company representing the next generation of American contemporary ballet, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (ASFB), will bring its fresh, fluid athleticism to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Tuesday, Mar. 20, 2012, 7:30 p.m.

Downtown Durango named “Emerging Creative District” - March 13, 2012
Downtown Durango has today (Mar. 9, 2012) been named one of eight Emerging Creative Districts by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade through the Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) division. Each Emerging District will receive $2,000 and technical assistance to further their district planning and development as an “arts community.”

New baseball fields to be christened “Alpine Bank Youth Complex” - March 13, 2012
Demonstrating its continuing commitment to the Durango community, Alpine Bank has stepped up with a $50,000 donation to Youth Baseball of Southwestern Colorado (YBSWC) in support of the new ball fields under construction adjacent to the Animas-La Plata project water transfer station in south Durango. When opened in late summer 2012, the fields will be christened the Alpine Bank Youth Complex.

This six week community-wide event focuses on a selection of original children’s book drawings and political cartoons by Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss), loaned by the Special Collections, at University of California San Diego in La Jolla, California. The Arts Center will be giving art experiences to children. Docents will offer tours and activities based on Seuss art. There will be a reading center, a film festival, a lecture series including Geisel’s place in children’s literature and his political cartoons during wartime.

Along with some of the best scenery on the planet, part of the attraction is the 500-rider limit, significantly smaller than many of the other bicycle tours.

Ska Brewing Announces 2nd Annual Snowdown/Pro-am Homebrew Competition - December 14, 2009
DURANGO, COLO., (Dec. 14, 2009) — Ska Brewing is proud to announce the return of the Snowdown Homebrew Competition for 2009. The event will take place on January 30th at the Ska Brewing World Headquarters in Durango, during “Snowdown”—Durango’s annual winter festival (www.snowdown.org.) The event is also a preliminary for the 2010 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) Pro/Am category, and will be an AHA/BJCP certified competition. Entry opens December 15th, and closes on January 15th. Beer entries must be in Ska’s posession no later than January 18th. The Snowdown Homebrew Competition’s website is www.durangohomebrew.com.
