Durango, Colo. Harken back to Victorian times in an Old West celebration set in this small historic town nestled in the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado. The Durango Heritage Celebration is a multi-faceted festival of Durango's colorful and diverse history. The community-wide event offers a variety of activities to highlight and expand interest in our history, to benefit the community and to afford people a great opportunity to have fun in a unique way!
The celebration focuses on the golden era in the history of Durango, from its founding in 1881 to 1910. Highlights include: a Grand Victorian Ball, a saloon show and 1880’s dinner, a Victorian fashion show and tea, a barbershop concert, a ride on our historic 1880’s narrow gauge train (for those in Victorian or Old West costume), historic trolley tours, a cemetery tour with re-enactors in period costume, antique sales, a traditional Hispanic dance demonstration and much more!
Sponsored by the City of Durango and its Downtown Business Improvement District, local businesses, organizations and other sponsors, this gathering has already proven itself to be a highly entertaining and educational destination event. Durango is steeped in history, so it’s the perfect setting for an event of this sort.
This city-wide event, which attracts national, regional and local attendees, will be held on October 8-11, 2009 in the downtown area. It offers the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful fall colors and temperate weather typically occurring at this time of year in Durango. Costumes are encouraged, but not required.
