Explore Durango's four most popular activities through, rafting, a scenic ride on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a historic jeep trail tour through Colorado's high country, and a guided tour through the largest archeological preserve in the US, Mesa Verde. Our Rivers, Rails, Mesas and Trails package combines a rafting trip on the Lower Animas River with a Jeep Trail Tour, a ride on the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and a ranger guided tour of the world famous cliff dwellings in just 2 and 1/2 days.
Day 1 - Lower Animas River - 1/2 day or full day guided river trip
The popular Lower Animas River is a great rafting adventure for families and groups with a large variety of age and adventure levels. With manly class I moving water, a few class II splashes and at least one wet and fun class III rapid this great sampler trip for ages 4 to 84! You'll be treated to a different view of Durango, while learning the fascinating history of the area. For those seeking a more adventurous trip, inflatable kayaks are a great option, because the smaller the boat the bigger the waves! No experience is necessary, our guides teach you all the necessary skills! These rafting adventures can last from a partial day trip to a full day trip!
Day 2 – Scenic Jeep Tour/Durango & Silverton History Narrow Gauge Railroad
After exploring the rivers of Colorado head for the mountains with a shuttle to Silverton from Durango on the Million Dollar Skyway. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views while going over two spectacular mountain passes, and rated in the top 10 most scenic drives in the US. Once in Silverton you will meet up with our experienced and knowledgeable jeep trail tour driver. Then, climb aboard our custom tour vehicles and our interpretive, experienced guide with take you north of Silverton to discover cascading waterfalls, tumbling creeks, Colorado's infamous wildflowers and mountain wildlife as you summit to 12,000 feet on old mining roads. Explore Colorado's most preserved ghost town Animas Forks, while our knowledgeable guides share the incredible history of the area. Kids on our trips have been known to find gold in the hills (fools gold) or early in the summer have a snowball fight! You will then come back to Silverton where you will enjoy lunch and shopping on your own. Finally, board the Narrow Gauge Railroad for the stunning trip back to Durango. Travel by a coal burning, steam-powered locomotive on the same tracks miners, cowboys and settlers of the Old West took over a century ago. Relive history with the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a truly spectacular journey on board the steam engine Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Travelers aboard the train have the option of choosing between the vintage coach or the open-air gondola.
Jeep/ Train Itinerary
8:00 Park your car at the Railroad parking lot located west of McDonalds on College Drive.
8:15 Board Mild to Wild vehicle at Railroad Parking Lot on the Southwest side of the McDonalds Parking Lot off of College Drive.
8:30 Depart from Railroad parking lot. Drive on the scenic Million Dollar Skyway passing through beautiful summits and passes!
10:00 Arrive in Silverton. Meet Jeep Tour guide at the Shady Lady Restaurant on Blair Street. Blair Street was the notorious "red-light" district in the late 1800's (still a dirt road!). Board our custom open-air tour vehicle and head for the Animas Forks ghost town. You'll drive through picturesque scenery, past rivers and cascading waterfalls and the colorful wildflowers of the spectacular San Juan Mountains!
1:15 Back in Silverton, enjoy shops and restaurants
2:30 Board train for return to Durango
2:45 Depart Silverton, this time traveling down in the gorge through pine-filled landscape and alongside the raging Animas River!

Day 3 - Mesa Verde National Park
Experience the archeological wonders and learn the culture of people who lived thousands of years ago, in these spectacular cliff dwellings and mesa tops. With over 4,000 identified sites in Mesa Verde, enjoy a ranger-guided half-day tour of Mesa Verde to get the most out of your visit. Rangers will guide you through the largest ruin Cliff Palace with 150 rooms and 23 underground ceremonial kivas, along with the sites along the Mesa Loop, while telling you the fascinating history each site.
