Durango, Colorado--When it comes to entertainment and the arts, Durango is no one-trick pony. The premier venue to feature the area’s variety of arts and entertainment is the Showcase of the Arts. The inaugural event is scheduled for September 10-19, 2010
Durango boasts a thriving and diverse collection of arts: from pottery to poetry, storytelling to sculpture, music to metalwork, theatre to live street performance and much more. The festival was created to share our wealth of arts and cultivate a broader audience for all we have to offer in Durango. This performance, demonstration, workshop, display, showing or exhibit multi-day festival promises something for everyone. Showcase of the Arts, presented by a newly invigorated Durango Arts Center board and staff will introduce a unique opportunity for art in all forms to exhibit or perform. Sheri Rochford Figgs, DAC’s Executive Director indicated, “The Durango Arts Center was a natural fit for ‘The Showcase’ and we love collaborating with the City of Durango, BID, DATO, the Durango Chamber of Commerce and all other interested organizations to make this inaugural year a success.”
“Showcase is a bold step forward in that for a brief period of several weeks each September, all forms of art, be it commercial or creative, can share the spotlight,” according to Bob Kunkel, creator of the Showcase concept. “For decades Durango has had quality art, but not art on a broad enough scale to consider it as both an attraction and an industry. Artists must continue to create like virtuosos with independent expression, purity, soul, passion, and originality. But they must also embrace commerce, and at times work together to organize and promote art in a cooperative, competitive and commercial marketplace.”
The paradigm that Showcase of the Arts hopes to break is that art is only well defined and disciplined. Showcase invites passion and creativity out of the box. From September 10 – 19, 2011, “Showcase” venues will be located across La Plata County: galleries, lobby areas, restaurants, museums, studios, banks, public spaces, theaters, stores, salons, bars and shops.
