Durango, Color., September 2010 – San Juan Citizens Alliance is proud to announce its 7th Annual Oktoberfest... a 2-day Fundraising Festival in downtown Durango on Saturday and Sunday, September 25th and 26th. After a year away from downtown, Oktoberfest will be back on Main Avenue, AND offer an authentic German Pancake Breakfast Sunday morning at 9:30am. One of the event organizer, Carol Clark, said that being on Main Avenue is a great place to be, and helps local businesses.
“We enjoyed trying a new location for Oktoberfest last year,” said Ms Clark. “But found that holding it on Main Avenue is much better for everyone, especially the businesses, and we want to help bring as much awareness to local businesses as possible. Plus it’s the 200th anniversary of the original Oktoberfest in Germany, and in its honor, we would like to make this year more spectacular than ever.”
Oktoberfest continues to grow every year attracting thousands of attendees, who are encouraged to ride their bikes to the festival, and help with decreasing waste by using the recycling stations, composting waste receptacles, and leaving no trace.
Oktoberfest 2010 kicks off Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.; festival goers can enjoy authentic German brats from Sunnyside Meats, local handcrafted beers, and a variety of other foods (wood-fire pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, and more). The original Oktoberfest was held 200 years ago on October 12, 1810 to celebrate the royal wedding of Bavarian King Ludwig I to Princess Therese. They were married in a meadow called Theresienwiese with festivities following for five days filled with bratwurst, bierz, and apfelstrudel. To this day, Oktoberfest continues to be celebrated in that same meadow and all around the world.
