Seuss on the Loose

Seuss on the Loose, selections of Dr. Seuss’ original drawings, will be exhibited at the Durango Arts Center from October 7 – November 12, 2011.  The exhibit opens at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 7 with a ticketed reception. The exhibit will offer a rare opportunity to see selections from the University of California San Diego including drawings from Seuss children’s books, political cartoons and advertising. The curator is Mary Ellen Long, who will be collaborating with many other artists to offer Seuss-inspired dance, adult and children’s artworks and lectures throughout the exhibit.

When asked to provide a description of this national exhibit, Mary Ellen Long wrote: “This six week exhibit is a community-wide event, centering on a selection of original children’s book drawings and political cartoons by Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss), loaned by the Special Collections, University of California, San Diego in La Jolla, California. The exhibit will focus on Ted Geisel’s process in publishing his many books and cartoons.”

Our town will be exploding with activities throughout the six weeks of the exhibit. Locally, the schools, the Durango Public Library and businesses will be involved with the children’s art programs. The Durango Arts Center will be giving art experiences to children in our Education Studio. The docents will offer tours and activities based on Seuss art. There will be a reading center, a Seuss Film Festival, a lecture series including Geisel’s place in children’s literature, his political cartoons during wartime and the history of the Seuss collection, as well as Seuss-inspired art by local artists and dancers.
