DURANGO, Colo. – More than 40 “dazzling” activities or events will be part of the seventh annual HOLiDAZZLE, the community celebration that encourages locals and visitors alike to make merry and experience the holidays Durango-style.
Organized by the Durango Business Improvement District (BID), with support of the City of Durango and Durango Area Tourism Office, HOLiDAZZLE kicks off on Friday, Nov. 25, 5 p.m., with the Singing with Santa caroling procession and Holiday Tree Lighting, and continues through New Year’s Day. In between, Durango’s HOLiDAZZLE offers up a magical variety of festivities for children of all ages. [A complete listing of events as of Nov. 15 follows.]
To help stimulate local shopping, some 85 Downtown merchants are offering opportunity gift drawings worth a total of more than $7,000. Participating merchants feature the festive “red” HOLiDAZZLE posters in their store windows, inviting shoppers to register. The prize drawings will be held within one week after the holidays. Winners will be notified by phone.
Merchants will also help put the dazzle in HOLiDAZZLE with the annual Window Decorating Contest. Representatives of the BID will select the winners on Noel Night, Dec. 2, and the top 20 will receive $50 gift certificates to Downtown shops for their efforts.
“Many of our merchants go all out with their window decorations,” said Pam Glasco, BID community relations coordinator. “The shop lights coupled with the decorated trees along the streets make a winter evening in Durango magical.”
Under the umbrella of HOLiDAZZLE, Noel Night on Dec. 2, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., is the largest, single shopping day/evening of the year. Organized by Local First, the non-profit entity that encourages local sustainability, Noel Night coordinates Downtown merchants to offer sales, specials or drawings throughout the day, extend their evening hours and include “something special” for shoppers who come Downtown. City street parking will be free throughout the day/evening.
“The day-long holiday celebration is sponsored by 100 Downtown merchants this year,” said LeeAnn Vallejos, managing director, Local First. “It's our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the community for supporting Historic Downtown Durango throughout the year. Participating merchants create their own, unique Noel Night celebration with discounts, drawings, holiday refreshments, entertainment, parties and more.”
To keep current on all HOLiDAZZLE activities, community members are encouraged to watch for the advertising inserts in the Durango Herald. For further information, including a list of all HOLiDAZZLE events, visit www.downtowndurango.org.
The Durango Business Improvement District was formed in 1997 with a goal and mission to support businesses within the District by assisting with special event marketing, providing research on topics of concern to the District (facilities, special events, best practices), planning and development of new facilities, and providing capital budget for equipment that enhances business in the District. Funding is generated by a 2 mill levy on property owners within the district, with additional marketing dollars contributed by the City of Durango and Durango Area Tourism Office.
