The Durango Area Tourism Office (DATO) board of directors unanimously approved Frank Lockwood as Deputy Director on April 12, 2017.

The search for a new executive director began when current leader Bob Kunkel announced plans to step down in 2017. Lockwood will serve as Deputy Director for a period from May 1st through June 30th, 2017. At that time the board will vote to appoint Lockwood Executive Director. Kunkel will remain on contract through the peak summer tourism season and to provide guidance for the 2018 budgeting process.

Lockwood is tasked with continuing the strong momentum of his predecessor and overseeing destination marketing, business administration, research, and community tourism management. “I am excited to continue the successful work of DATO developing tourism as a viable, year-round industry that supports the long term economic sustainability for Durango and La Plata County,” says Lockwood. “DATO will not only be involved with attracting quality visitors to our area, but will also strive to make our area even more attractive with facilities that support both businesses and other cultural visitors.”

“On behalf of the DATO board of directors, we’d like to welcome Frank and congratulate him on the new position,” says Alex Mickel, DATO board chair. "We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Bob Kunkel for his exceptional work and dedication to DATO over the years. His willingness to assist with the transition and support Frank in his new role exemplifies his unwavering commitment to our community and Colorado tourism. We’ll truly miss working with Bob, but appreciate having his expertise and guidance through the end of the year.”
