The James Ranch is ten miles north of Durango in the beautiful Animas River Valley. Here, you can experience the delicious organic food raised on the 400 acres of high altitude, irrigated pastures, by shopping in their Farm Market or at their little restaurant Harvest Grill & Greens. When you arrive at the Market and Grill area you can pet the kid goats, watch the chickens or take a self-guided walking tour around the ranch terraces. If you visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays you can watch cheese being made from the milk given by the dairy cows that morning. When in season, fresh vegetables grown on the ranch are available in the market as well as their farm fresh eggs, artisan cheeses, frozen beef and pork. For more information about the products produced on the ranch, visit www.JamesRanch.net for more information.
Tour the Ranch
James ranch tours began as a way for the James families to share their ranch with the community. Expect to be captivated by the beauty of the 400 acre ranch in the Animas River Valley as you are pulled on a wagon behind a tractor or ride on an electric cart* that is guided by patriarch Dave James. With the 2 1/2 hour tour, you will be taken through the lush green pastures where the grass-fed cattle graze along with the wild elk and deer. You will visit the seasonal dairy and cheese making facility where you will be able to observe a part of the artisan cheese making process. You can expect to visit the gardens, hens, turkeys, pigs and cattle while learning about sustainable farming and ranching and its importance to healthy and ethically-treated animals. You will be able to ask questions about the soil, water, forages, and wildlife policies employed at the James Ranch. Reservations are required. Call (970) 385-6858 for tour schedule and availablity.
