Visit Durango is thrilled to welcome you to the 2021 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships! We are very excited to host this year’s event. The officials, including Purgatory staff, have designed spectacular courses to challenge you at every turn, including downhill, cross-country, short-track, and dual slalom. Cycling events are taking place at Purgatory Resort, 30 minutes outside of downtown Durango.
Durango CO, nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado, Durango is home to some of the world’s best single track mountain biking, road biking, and outdoor recreation. In addition to more than 1,000 miles of trails surrounding this community, there are numerous organized races and tours that appeal to a whole range of biking abilities. Whether you are a professional racer, a weekend warrior or still using training wheels, Durango offers the perfect atmosphere, event support, and vacation town amenities to make every ride a memorable one.
The exceptionally friendly bicycle culture earned Durango Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists. The application process provided an opportunity for the city to review its infrastructures, roads, bike paths, trails, and school routes. The evaluation highlights the quantity, quality, interconnectivity, and proximity of trail systems throughout Durango.
In 2013, local bike business Mountain Bike Specialists was recognized by the League of American Bicyclists with a Bicycle Friendly Business Award: Silver Level.
Along with a host of professional and Olympic riders, Durango is home to Fort Lewis College, 17-time national cycling champions. Its accolades include the NCCA Collegiate National 2009, 2004, and 2003 Mountain Bike Champions, 2003 and 2004 Collegiate National Cyclocross Champions, and 2004 Collegiate National Road Bike Runners Up. These athletes are a testament to the quality of riding found in the Durango area.
In addition to all the mountain biking activities and trails waiting to be explored, the Fall colors create a gorgeous backdrop for the photographer in you. Family adventures abound with zipline action, whitewater rafting, Mesa Verde National Park (a UNESCO Heritage Site, only an hour away), and of course, the Durango and Silverton Narrow-Gauge Railroad train. There is never a better time to visit Southern Colorado’s favorite Western town.
