Durango is known for some of the best cross country skiing in Colorado; With an abundance of trails and numerous groomed nordic centers, Durango is the perfect spot for pros and beginners alike.

With so many places to cross country ski around Durango and hundreds of thousands of acres in our national forests, it’s hard to narrow down a place to go! Luckily, we’re making it easy for you. Here are some of our favorite cross country skiing trails around Durango:

San Juan National Forest

Covering almost 2 million acres of land, the San Juan National Forest is one of the most beautiful and scenic places to ski free XC skiing, and wandering is more your style. For high alpine trails and maps click here.

One of the most scenic options is the Colorado Trail. Segment 25 can be accessed from the scenic overlook on Molas Pass, rolling through the San Juan high country and passing beautiful high alpine lakes.


Nordic Centers

If speed and fitness is your game, Durango has more than a few groomed nordic centers perfect for those looking to go fast, or not get too lost. The Purgatory Nordic Center offers 20km of scenic trails along with rentals and gear. 

The Hillcrest Golf course also offers a groomed trail network in the heart of town offered at no charge and groomed entirely by volunteers!
