Durango’s 1st Annual Cycling Celebration

Visit Durango and the City of Durango are excited to announce the inaugural Spoketober, a series of events that will take place throughout Durango for the entire month of October 2022. This event is a celebration of Durango’s tight-knit and passionate cycling community. It will highlight the decades of dedication residents have committed to making Durango one of the top cycling destinations in the nation. Participating organizations include Durango Trails, the Adaptive Sports Association, Fort Lewis College and the Fort Lewis College’s Cycling Team, Purgatory Resort, Team Segment 28, Bike Durango, the Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships, Durango’s DEVO Youth Halloween Parade, Durango Hot Springs, the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, and a local legends meet-and-greet with cycling stars like Ned Overend, Todd Wells, Payson McElveen, Howard Grotts, Ellen Campbell, and more at Mountain Bike Specialists.

Durango Cycling Legends Meet & Greet

Meet Ned Overend, Todd Wells, Payson McElveen, Howard Grotts, Ellen Campbell, and other cycling professionals at Mountain Bike Specialist for the kick-off of Spoketober. Win cycling prizes, take photos with the pros, hear the best cycling stories from years of competition, and celebrate cycling in Durango.

Star Wars Party Train to Brown's Ridge Jump Jam

Take a trail ride with the Fort Lewis College Downhill Team Captain and friends! Enjoy a chill spin up to Star Wars, a group train ride down to climb up 8 Bells Trail, and a jump jam on the rebuilt Brown's Ridge Trail.

Share the Love Cycle

The "Share the Love Cycle" event brings heart to Spoketober as Durango residents can donate their bikes and bike parts on Friday, October 7th at Buckley Park. Durango residents can also learn about bicycle mechanic basics on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, professional bike mechanics will be upcycling bikes and preparing them to be donated to the Navajo Nation. The Group "Fun" Ride from Fort Lewis College to downtown will end at the "Share the Love Cycle" event on Sunday with a continued celebration of Durango's cycling community.

Group "Fun" Ride from Fort Lewis College to Buckley Park

Cyclists of all ages and skill levels are invited to partake in Durango's largest group "fun" ride. The party starts at 11 am at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, where hundreds of Durango cyclists will converge for a massive group ride from the college to Buckley Park in downtown Durango. Local radio stations will be playing music, and local businesses and organizations will have booths with information, prizes, and more. The "Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture" exhibit at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis will be open at 11 am on October 9th before the Group "Fun" Ride. Riders are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. The Durango Police Department is providing rolling road closures so that bikes can safely take over the roads. Members of the Fort Lewis Cycling team will act as guides with riders at the front and back of the group. There will be a pre-ride briefing at 12:45 pm.

Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture

An annual tradition in Durango for fifty years, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has been bringing cyclists together to race the train on Memorial Day weekend since 1972. This exhibit celebrates the second oldest bicycle race in the country and Durango’s unique cycling culture and history. The exhibit will be open at 11 am on October 9th before the Group "Fun" Ride.

USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Championships

Spoketober Colorado Trail Maintenance with Durango Trails

Join us for trailwork on the Colorado Trail to celebrate the inaugural Spoketober! We plan to work the length of the trail between the trailhead and Gudy’s Rest. Durango Trails will provide lunch afterward. No experience is necessary for trailwork, and Durango Trails will provide the necessary instruction, safety tool talk, tools, work gloves, and water and snacks for the entire crew. Please wear and bring the following: long pants, long-sleeved shirt, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, rain jacket, gloves, eye protection, backpack to carry water. Durango En Masse: Cycle Commuting Empowerment

Bike Durango is hosting Durango En Masse to promote commuting by bike in Durango. Durango En Masse is a group bicycle ride from the Durango Welcome Center to Ska Brewing to encourage and inspire people to ride their bikes more and drive their cars less. No need for competitive bicycle riding skills, fancy bikes, or lycra. Durango En Masse will roll out at a leisurely, conversational pace, and friends and laughter are encouraged. Learn how easy it is to commute by bike in Durango.

Durango DEVO Kid’s Halloween Parade

Celebrate the season at the 2022 Halloween Bike Parade and Powerhouse Party. The parade departs from the Durango Recreation Center at 4:00 pm (Riders Pre-K and younger can join at Rotary Park at 4:15). The parade ends at the Durango Powerhouse for a Halloween Party and DEVO fundraiser! This event is open to the public. Parental supervision is required for both the parade and the party. Wear your Halloween costume and decorate your bike.

Bicycle Karaoke Celebration

Celebrate cycling with song at the Spoketober Bicycle Karaoke Celebration at the 8th Ave Tavern. People who ride their bikes to 8th Ave Tavern get to jump to the head of the karaoke line giving them a chance to sing with less of a wait. Spoketober concludes with the Homegrown Adventures Film Fest at the Durango Welcome Center where the best video submissions from the Spoketober Video Contest will be premiered on the big screen. The best videos in each category will receive prizes and be featured on @VisitDurango and @SpoketoberDurango. Everyone in attendance will receive free cycling-themed posters, stickers, and more.
