Welcome to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad! We are OPEN year-round and run excursion and special event trains across all four seasons.
Our winter season kicks off November 20th with the beginning of our family-friendly holiday train, THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride! This magical event, based on the movie of the same name, is a theatrical recreation of the story about a child’s Christmas Eve journey and features a vintage steam train ride to the North Pole where you’ll see live reindeer, meet characters from the story and visit Santa’s workshop,.All excursions are running at reduced capacity and feature COVID cleanliness and safety protocols including the requirement of wearing masks/facial coverings and practicing social distancing. See website, durangotrain.com for schedule and fare information.
We’re also running our Cascade Canyon Winter Train excursion, a 5-hour roundtrip journey onboard a historic steam train which departs from our Durango Depot and travels up into the Rocky Mountains to Cascade Canyon, a beautiful wilderness area deep within the San Juan National Forest! You’ll experience the iconic highline horseshoe curve as you traverse deep into the Animas River Canyon. Upon arrival to Cascade Canyon, you’ll enjoy a 45 minute layover, a perfect setting for a fireside lunch inside the pavilion or a short walk along the Animas River to a footbridge providing a perfect photo opportunity. Trains are running on select dates throughout the holiday season.
All excursions are running at reduced capacity and feature COVID cleanliness and safety protocols including the requirement of wearing masks/facial coverings and practicing social distancing.
