The Durango train winds through spectacular & breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of the two-million acre San Juan National Forest for an unforgettable year-round adventure. Experience the adventure of traveling by a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive on the same tracks miners, cowboys and settlers of the Old West took over a century ago. Relive history with the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a truly spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
The Winter Cascade Canyon excursions go about 2/3rds of the trip to Silverton due to snow conditions just South of Silverton. The stop includes a pavilion with a bon fire and picnic tables. Bring your own lunch or order a box lunch from the train.
The train has been in continuous operation since 1882. Visitors between the months of May and October can take a full day excursion to and from Silverton by purchasing a round-trip train ticket, or choose a shorter option by taking a motor coach one way. To go along with the train ride, the Durango & SIlverton also offers multiple adventure packages, including rafting, horseback riding, ATV Tours and Ziplining packages. There are also multiple events held on board throughout the year, including the Dinosaur Train, Durango Brew Train, Wine & Rails, True West Railfest and the Polar Express just to name a few.
