FLC’s history is interwoven with the history and people of southwest Colorado and the Four Corners area. Situated on land that is home to the Native tribes of the region, FLC has, like the region, undergone many transitions as an educational institution, and contains many histories.

The students

While these numbers vary year to year, roughly 3230 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students make up FLC’s student body. FLC is regularly acknowledged for its diverse student population, with over half identifying as students of color.

Small classes and original research

Whether focused on the sciences or the humanities, students at FLC have the opportunity to conduct graduate level research while working on their bachelor’s degree. What’s more, small class size, an engaged and accessible faculty, and a culture of experiential learning, combine to foster mentoring relationships that give graduates a meaningful leg up as they pursue careers or additional schooling.

Academics

FLC’s three schools offer over fifty majors, minors, and certificates in the arts and sciences, business, and education, and five graduate programs in education. Sitter Family Hall offers state-of-the-art labs and technologies for students in geosciences, physics, and engineering, and Adventure Education students develop their leadership skills in the mountains, rivers, and canyons of the Four Corners region.

Best view in town

The 247-acre Fort Lewis College campus, at 6,872 feet atop a mesa overlooking historic downtown Durango affords breathtaking views of the Animas River Valley and the La Plata Mountains. The campus’ distinctive architecture evokes the region’s Native Puebloan building style with locally quarried sandstone. Many students make campus their home in student housing, with direct access to the limitless hiking and mountain biking trails right from their door. Try walking up the SkySteps to get a workout in on your way to campus, and head to the Student Union Building for refreshments while you take in the view.

Clubs & organizations

FLC hosts about 60 student-run groups from academic affinity groups, to those focused on recreation and leisure. Additionally, WellPAC is a student peer support group, the Environmental Center runs campus sustainability initiatives, and the Ballantine Media Center amplifies student voices in radio, journalism, and creative expression. The Diversity Collaborative supports events and resources run through El Centro de Muchos Colores, the Native American Center, the Black Student Union, and the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center.

Cost & scholarships

FLC offers tuition and fees among the lowest of any four-year public institution in Colorado. Add foundation and departmental scholarships, the Native American Tuition Waiver, and specific student support funds, and college becomes more affordable than you might think.
