Established in 2018, PlayFest brings emerging and established playwrights, well-known actors, and directors to Durango, CO, each summer to workshop new plays over the course of a week. Playwrights have the opportunity to rewrite and develop the works in advance of holding captivating, staged readings for local audiences. Learn more here.
The audience is an essential part of this collaborative creative process, giving feedback to help playwrights finetune their plays further. In exchange, audiences get a front-row seat to the process of play development and insights into how these professionals work together as a team.
The four plays selected each year reflect themes that have universal appeal, and are a mix of comedy and drama. Many of the actors are familiar faces from television and film who also have impressive theatre experience in regional and national productions, including Broadway.

All play readings take place at the Durango Arts Center Theatre, 802 E. 2 nd Avenue in historic downtown Durango, CO. PlayFest’s Annual Festival Party and Kick-Off Event takes place June 25 from 6 -8 p.m. in the beautiful Secret Garden at the Rochester Hotel, 726 E. 2nd Avenue.
